As a collector of things old, borderline obsolete and cheap, I recently purchased an ancient (2003-vintage) DSLR. The basic wide-angle zoom lens is nice, but I’ve decided that I need something with a longer focal length as well. I have found that I can just buy the lens I want for about $50, or I can buy the lens and another camera body, newer than the one I have, for just $15 more (if nobody else bids, that is). Would I be a fool to pass this up?

Buy them all, sell what you don’t like.
Or just get the lens. Lenses are much more important to collect than bodies. I just got a couple of great Super Takumar lenses from the 60s that are super sharp and were $50 each.

For $15, why not? If there’s no time constraint on just the lens, bid on the whole package and if it goes above what you’re willing to pay just get the straight lens. Since you said bid I’m assuming you’re talking about eBay. Can you offer the seller of the body and lens a set amount i.e Make an Offer option? Either way for $15 the peace of mind of having another body lying around is worth it to me.

I think you’re throwing away money on antiquated gear. Film cameras are one thing, but old digital cams are junk. Just my $.02.

I figure I can reuse the lenses on the micro-4/3 camera body that I actually want. But I figure that $15 for an extra DSLR body isn’t such a bad deal.
I’ve got tons of 35mm gear that I have no idea what to do with. I wish I had a display case in the house as that seems to be the only place these things belong these days.

What are the lenses and gear we are talking about here? I have an EM10-II that I really like, for what it is it was pretty cheap.
the 35mm gear is subjective. I got back into for a while but I missed the instant gratification, for lack of a better description, with digital.

As someone with 4/3 and m4/3 gear, you don’t want to reuse a 4/3 lens on your mirrorless (especially if it’s that one). The new Zukio glass is better and lighter, and frankly quite cheap. I have a E-510 with a 14-45 and 14-150(newer model than the one you posted). It was a great camera at the time, and still takes good pictures. It can’t however hold a candle to my EM-5mkII that I recently got with the 12-60 2.8. I have been won over for mirrorless. I did have a really hard time not buying a brand new E-620 body and a camera shop the other day when I found it in the 50% off bin though.

As someone who just gave away a bunch of junk, including an old, antiquated digital camera, don’t buy it and save your money for something closer to 3 years old vs 13 years old.
